From Linnasmäki’s yard, you can directly access the fitness trail, along which you can take walks of various lengths. In winters with heavy snow, the fitness trail serves as a ski track. We also have a few walking poles that can be borrowed from our reception.

You’ll find the ping pong table under the canopy of the main entrance, and it’s available year-round. During summer, you can play ping pong outdoors by borrowing rackets and a ball from our reception. We also lend Mölkky and other outdoor and board games.

By bike, it is wonderful to cycle to the city center along the beautiful riverbank or embark on a longer ride. Bicycles can be rented from our reception from May to September.

The hostel’s 3rd-floor lounge features a book and magazine shelf, where you can borrow or exchange books and magazines.

In summer, we open a small play corner for children where they can draw, read, play, and watch television. In the play corner, children are under their parents’ responsibility.

Responsibility is an important part of Linnasmäki’s values, and we encourage our customers to move as much as possible by walking, cycling, or using public transport, especially when visiting nearby attractions. The natural sites in the surrounding area have a long history, and we want to remind everyone to do their part in respecting and preserving biodiversity. When visiting these sites, one should follow internationally established good practices and local guidelines.

Hiking Skills at Linnasmäki

During the trip, you will receive instruction in various hiking skills from an experienced nature and wilderness guide. With the guide, you can explore the world of plants and animals in the forest while the guide provides hiking tips.

During this interactive session suitable for the whole family, we dive into the meaningful characters and stories of our folklore and spell tradition through the methods of live storytelling and nature education. The dramatically progressing activity, which includes various tasks, explores the relationship between humans and nature and survival there – while being inspired by our rich storytelling tradition.

The session proceeds under the guidance of Anna-Maria Toivonen (storyteller-folk music pedagogue) and Niina Heikkilä (nature and wilderness guide and drama educator). Please also inquire about other storytelling packages.

Storytelling Performance: the Swan Maiden's Tale

The Swan Maiden’s Tale is based on age-old transformation stories that storyteller Anna-Maria Toivonen has studied for several years while preparing this performance. The story combines myths of Finnish women turning into swans and Scottish and Greenlandic selkie and sealskin stories.

The Swan Maiden’s Tale invites listeners to ponder what happens if our wings are taken away. There are times in our lives when we have to put ourselves and our creativity aside because our attention is needed elsewhere. We endure it, as long as we know we’ll be able to dance, sing, paint, play, or whatever it is we need to do to be ourselves again.
